SPINNAKERS ON REACH
PROPOSAL
Revise VPP to better reflect the usable range of spinnakers at 70-120 TWA when heeling is the
limiting factor.
RATIONALE
It seems that nobody is capable of using spinnakers as the VPP suggests. Most boats should carry
a spinnaker at 14-16 knots 90 TWA, but are not able to even at 110 TWA. This gives a clear
disadvantage to boats with a big spinnaker, but no Code 0 or genoa. Also the IW becomes easily
far too low, since typically a boat is equally fast at 10-12 knots using a spinnaker as at 16 knots
with a jib at 90-110 TWA. This gives a further disadvantage to big spinnakers.

ASYMMETRIC SPINNAKER AND CODE 0 TREATMENT
PROPOSAL
Revise the VPP to treat asymmetric spinnakers and Code 0's more fairly. The jump at 75% should
be removed and the coefficients of an asymmetric spinnaker at tight angles should be checked.
RATIONALE
Many boats have a "fake" Code 0 just at 75% made from laminate. This seems to have very little
effect on the rating for boats having symmetric spinnakers, but still makes them clearly faster in
conditions where boats have difficulties carrying a spinnaker. The rating jump to 74.9% Code 0
makes it much less used.

OVERALL TREATMENT ON A BEAT
PROPOSAL
Revise the reefing algorithm so that a jib is used on a 20 knot TWS beat. The reef parameter is
1.00 even for boats that have no chance of carrying a 130-150% genoa.
RATIONALE
Almost all boats having a genoa use a jib on a 20 knot TWS beat, but still get a rating
disadvantage compared to boats having only a jib.
